"It is perhaps only fitting that my younger brother is an interior designer. From an architect"s point of view, interior designers are often a "pain-in-neck" - similar to how one might view their younger brother sometimes! Interior designers generally like to argue with the rest of the development team without understanding the limitations of a building"s design and structure while younger brothers often like to argue just for the sake of arguing. In an ironic, yet maybe not so ironic twist of fate, I am an architect and Simon Wong is both my younger brother and an interior designer.
Simon returned to Hong Kong to begin working for my architectural firm. I believe this has given Simon an edge over many other interior designers, as it is not often that you have an older brother constantly nurturing, reminding and pushing you to simultaneously understand the older brother"s, the manager"s, the engineers and the architect"s point of view on projects. This has served Simon well as he understands that the success of any project only comes from being part of a strong development team.
Due to the nature of the industry, there are a few points that hold true: my younger brother spent 4 years in design school while I spent 8 years to acquire all the necessary architectural qualifications; my younger brother works for 3 to 4 months on a project while I have to work 3 to 4 years on a project; my younger brother carries much less legal liabilities than me the architect; and at the end of the day, my brother makes more money as an interior designer than me as an architect.
Interior designers are not easy people to work with, but they are an essential part of the development team as the quality of their products essentially determines how well the completed projects can eventually sell for. Similarly, regardless of how much pain and anguish a younger brother can bring to a family, they are an essential part of the family unit that can"t be left out."
