All shipping was once composed of small craft and since that remote day small craft have consistently played a big if unspectacular role in the affairs of the sea. Traditionally they have been built rather than designed, the products of competent shipwrights working by eye or from the carved model. The quality of naval architecture inspiring them, whether yachts or working vessels, sail or power, was rarely high, and sailing yachts were the first of the small sailing vessels to receive the tribute of expert design. By the time this had occurred they were also almost the only small craft still using the wind for propulsion. Это и многое другое вы найдете в книге The Naval Architecture of Small Cfaft (D.
