In editing these papers by my Father, the late Dr. Herbert Davies, a sad and melancholy pleasure falls to my lot. It was his earnest wish and intention to have published them himself during his life-time, but such unfortunately was not to be the case, and shortly before his death, he instructed me to edit them on his behalf. They are the result of many years careful study and matured thought on a subject in which he took the most profound and deep interest. Only those who were intimately acquainted with my Father are aware of the infinite care and trouble which he bestowed on his writings. He never drew any conclusions without most carefully and assiduously verifying the absolute correctness and soundness of his facts.
