Excerpt from The Higher Agnosticism
Whether the course of history could conceivably have been different from what we know it actually was, is a question which will be generally answered in the negative. And that by two opposing parties. The Christian will deny it on the ground that everything is ordained by God, who knows all things from the beginning; the materialist will trace the unbroken chain of cause and effect which exists as much in the mental world as in the physical, and entirely excludes free will. The empiricist, of course, flouts logic and providence alike, and appeals to daily experience.
