The intrinsic value of this little book will not depend on the notice that may be taken of it, or on the silent contempt that may be shown to it by the public Press. Although I am far from satisfied with it myself, and deeply bewail its shortcomings, I am nevertheless certain that, if any spoken or written words are of importance at all, what is written here is of vital importance to all truly religious souls, and through them to the world at large.

This book is a statement, more or less true and accurate, of what may thoroughly be believed and gladly embraced (concerning the sublime themes of God, and man, and destiny), without the least violence to reason, conscience, and love, which are the common properties of human nature.
