My object in the following pages has been to describe briefly the origin and growth of the British Co-operative Movement as one form of democratic association - as one aspect of that larger movement towards an Industrial Democracy which has characterized the history of the British working class of the 19th century. Hence it was essential to my purpose to present the reader with a general view of the condition of the working class in the first decades of this century brought about by the Industrial Revolution, and with a genera;! idea of the spirit of association which resulted therefrom. The two first chapters are therefore, to a certain extent, introductory; the history of the British Co-operative Movement beginning, at page 39, with an account of the early Co-operative Corn Milling Societies or the Union shops.
