As these pages go to press, there comes a message of unspeakable sadness bearing news of Henry George's death.

A great and good man has passed away; a staunch and intrepid champion of the wronged and oppressed has laid down his life in their service.

The world is better and purer for the life of such a man, for as long as there are leaders in our midst so fearless, so incorruptible, so outspoken, there is hope for moral regeneration, hope for self-government, hope for industrial emancipation. This man stood up for the righting of deep-seated wrongs and has labored nobly in the cause of social justice. Other shoulders must take up the burden where awearied he has left it.

It is right and fitting that this preface be the eulogy of one whose works and deeds largely inspired the writing of this book, and that it be a tribute of respect and affection, more deeply felt than duly expressed, to the memory of one who devoted his life to the betterment of mankind.
