Excerpt from History of the Reformation in Germany, Vol. 1

The work, of which a part is now laid before the public, consists of five volumes. It may, according to the view expressed to me by the Author, be divided into three epochs. Of these, the first is contained in the two following volumes; the second, in the third volume; and the last, in the fourth and fifth.

It is, perhaps, necessary to offer some apology for the space occupied by the notes, in consequence of the plan I have adopted in respect of a large portion of them. The German authorities cited are chiefly cotemporaneous - many of them unprinted, and drawn from different parts of the vast empire through which the German tongue is spoken.
