Paris lies in the heart of the lle-de-France, the fruitful and productive province and region that lies at the core of the broad Paris Basin and that includes almost one-third of France. The Seine flows from the southeast to the southwest, in a grand arc through the city. Near the northernmost point of the river"s arc lie two islands: lie Saint-Louis and the larger lie de la Cite, upon which Notre-Dame is situated.
