The impala is the only member of the genus Aepycetos (family Bovidae), although some have proposed classifying them with gazelles and kobs. They are well known for their jumping ability – known as "pronking" – and can easily leap 3 meters vertically, covering 11 meters with each bound. Impala are the staple diet for many of the savannah predators, including leopards (Panthera pardus) and lions (Panthera leo), and the impala’s leaping ability makes it harder for a predator to select and focus on a single animal. Impala also have a tendency to zigzag as they run, cutting in front of each other and creating a sudden, explosive mass of antelope able to confuse any would-be hunter.
