Creatures at the Top is a true story narrated by the author Stephen Amos Mpofu (Sam). The book starts with the author"s joys and sorrows during seventeen years in exile, working as a journalist in Zambia. The story subsequently outlines the nasty narrative the writer experienced upon returning home to his native Zimbabwe, in 1980. The second part of the book presents the author"s journalism experience with Zimbabwe Newspapers for over twenty years, working in editorial positions at The Herald, The Sunday Mail and at The Chronicle which he edited for 12 years. Apart from reflecting on the political history of Zimbabwe, the book also highlights the pervasive nature of corruption that has permeated some structures of Zimbabwean society over the years. The author argues that corruption has grown to disconcerting levels, partly exacerbated by insatiable greed and partly by economic hardships. The author suggests that media in Africa should not passively watch over society while corrupt leaders hibernating in political parties and in governments escape scrutiny and exposure and become untouchable creatures at the top.
