Biomedical Signal Processing: Devices, Methods, and Experimentation (Synthesis Lectures on Biomedical Engineering) Eric Wade

The study of biological signal processing devices is the study of transduction. Specifically, we must understand how to take the naturally generated signals in and on our bodies, and through transduction (and amplification) convert them to something that can be read by normal data acquisition devices. With this in mind, human physiology will be discussed where relevant, but the focus of this text will be on the underlying physics of the sensors. This book will be organized as follows: Chapter 1 will discuss the general idea of biological signal processing, and why it"s needed. I will then discuss past and present trends in the field. Chapter 2 will describe the devices and their relevant signals, with regard to the various biological systems (e.g. cardiopulmonary and musculo-skeletal). I will also cover the basic computational methods used in the sensor systems. Chapter 3 will go into the principles of performing experiments on actual subjects. Chapter 4 will describe some current research applications in greater detail. In Chapter 5, I will describe some of the related tools (such as software suites) useful in the field, and finally Chapter 6 will present a discussion of future trends in the field.
