The bulk manufacturing of commodity items to a large extent has moved offshore, so I have come to the conclusion that the future of manufacturing in the U.S. and Europe belongs to those companies that are built to handle change. Manufacturers in the future must consistently process change quicker and smarter than their competitors. I believe that the best way to do this is by building better planning and scheduling systems. It is fair to say that I have been significantly influenced by the writings of Eli Goldratt as laid out in The Goal and The Theory of Constraints . I feel that Goldratt has done a great job helping people to understand the nature of capacity constraints. Goldratt s ideas have paved the way for new technologies that are capable of delivering very creative and exciting solutions to problems that have plagued manufacturers for years.
