Wallpaper has long been considered the poor relation of the decorative arts: fragile, ephemeral, easy to replace - it has often disappeared from the historical record. A history of wallpaper has been recovered piecemeal through the various collections and archives in museums, and the papers that survive in historic buildings and in pictorial records of interiors. As a museum of the decorative and domestic arts the Victoria and Albert Museum began collecting wallpapers from its foundation in 1856, and today has one of the finest collections in the world. Inevitably this account of wallpaper in interior decoration will draw extensively on the material evidence in the V&A, but it will also set the use and choice of wallpaper in the context of 1 contemporary opinion, taste, income and social status.
