The momentum of Asia"s economic growth achieved over the past three decades has contradicted all predictions that were made at the beginning of the 1960s. No observer of Asian affairs would have considered this to be possible, given the history of military conflicts, insurrections, and major political problems that affected many Asian countries after the end of the Second World War. India and Pakistan, the countries of Indochina, and the two Koreas had major conflicts. Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka faced guerrilla insurrections. China loosed murderous Red Guards on their own population, while Cambodia, under the Khmer Rouge, surpassed this record by murdering 15 to 20 percent of the country"s population, particularly the more educated groups.
