Originally published in the Soviet Union in 1960, the foreword begins:. "Over 25 minorities inhabit the vast expanses of the Far North of Soviet Union. Among them are the Nentsy, Evenks, Dolgans, Nganasans, Selkups, Chukchi, Koryaks and many others, totalling nearly a million people in all. The number of persons belonging to these ethnic groups may vary from several hundred to several hundred thousand." This was an official economic and social survey of the minorities of the region.
