Rembrandt van Rijn is today widely regarded not only as the greatest Dutch painter but also as one of the world's supreme creative artists, to be ranked with Shakespeare, Beethoven or Dante. Rembrandt attached great importance to drawing and etching, but this volume concentrates on his paintings. Many of his most famous pictures are reproduced, including "The Night Watch", "The Anatomy Lesson" and "Jacob blessing the Children of Joseph", often with details, which not only isolate images of the greatest beauty but also emphasize the power and variety of Rembrandt's brushwork. The range of his subject-matter is brought out in landscapes, in scenes from the Bible and ancient history, in portraits - and in particular the self-portraits, which constitute one of the most remarkable autobiographies ever produced. Equally fascinating is Rembrandt's development as an artist: and here may be studied, in sequence, early and minutely painted panels like "Tobit and Anna"; the flamboyant paintings of his prosperous Amsterdam years - among them "The Feast of Belshazzar"; and the masterly works of the later period, with their free handling, glowing colours, and unique combination of insight and compassion.
