The history of travel dates back to the early epochs of Man. It covers the first trading ventures, the tourist traffic in ancient Homo, pilgramages, travelling scholars, strolling players, travelling journeymen, educational journeys, gentlemen on the Grand Tour, journeys in the name of the Enlightenment and Italomania, voyages of discovery and journeys to spas up to present-day tourism. Travelling is not only a question of the routes and the means of transport or of the destination, hut above all of the different unterlying motives. For what reason did men went on grand voyage at various epochs disregarding every danger and difficulty? It was the thirst for knowledge and freedom, a sense of adventure, religious zeal, an eagerness to learn and to broaden one's horizons, encounters with people and with nature. So varied are the reasons, so inexhaustible have been the narratives of such journeys in literature through the centuries. The many quotations, given by the author, testify to it.
