This normative (practical) course in English phonetics is meant chiefly for students at Pedagogical Institutes and Faculties of Foreign Languages, who are training to become teachers of English in Soviet schools.
The object of this book is to provide these students with theoretical and practical material which will help them to master English pronunciation themselves and to learn how to teach it to others. The book consists of three parts: Essentials of English Phonetics, Phonetic Exercises and Phonetic Reader. The book contains also a vocabulary including phonetic terms now in use, and their Russian equivalents.
The bulk of the material presented in the book has been used for many I years in teaching students at the First State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages (Moscow) and has, in the authors' opinion, passed the test of time.
In preparing the book for publication, the authors have, however, considerably enlarged the original material. They have also altered it so as to incorporate in the book the latest results of phonetic investigation in the Soviet Union. Thus the theoretical treatment of many phonetic phenomena in the book is different from what is to be found in the current works of British and American phoneticians (the concept of the phoneme, the classification о English phonemes, intonation, etc.). The general theoretical principles upon which the book is built are those elaborated in the works of Soviet philologists. Это и многое другое вы найдете в книге Фонетика английского языка.
