Howells (1837-1920) was an American realist novelist, literary critic, and playwright, particularly known for his tenure as editor of The Atlantic Monthly, as well as for his own prolific writings. He wrote numerous essays on contemporary literary figures and this one on his friend Mark Twain was included in Literary Friends and Acquaintances (1900), a collection of essays which had first appeared as magazine pieces starting from 1894.
