The INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION (IEC), founded in 1906, is the authority for world standards for electrical and electronic engineering. It comprises representative National Committees in 43 countries. One of its earliest undertakings was to establish standard nomenclature and definitions of terms used in electrical and electronic engineering. This resulted in its publishing the INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL VOCABULARY. Revision of the Vocabulary to take account of changing usage and advancing technology has continued ever since. The IEC MULTILINGUAL DICTIONARY OF ELECTRICITY, now published for the first time, is based on the current 40 chapters of the INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL VOCABULARY. It defines more than 7500 terms in English and in French, and gives the equivalent terms in seven other languages. Indexes in these languages direct the user to the English and French terms and definitions. The entries in the different languages, and their equivalence, have been approved by engineers and scientists in the countries concerned.
