We are pleased to introduce our readers to some of the most perceptive and welcome travelers America has ever received. Each came to give witness to the American experiment, and each gave us the benefit of his or her experience by writing about it, some, like Bryce and Tocqueville, in full studies of the young democracy, others, like Marti and Sienkiewicz, in newspaper articles or letters to their friends and family. Not all the comments were favorable, but criticism can also be a contribution. We are grateful to all of them. Together they present a fine example of the visitor enriching the host.
