First published in the middle of the last century, the cycle of stories and short essays known as "A Hunter's Sketches" was to bring world fame to its author, Ivan Turgenev. The great interest aroused by the sketches was due to Turgenev's novel approach to the Russian countryside, the Russian peasant: for the first time in Russian literature peasants are shown as individual human beings with intellectual and spiritual potentialities. The stories, written with great artistry, humour and realism, contributed in no small measure to a change of attitude towards the peasant and they were to become an effective weapon against serfdom.
