A little girl and her brother live happily with their parents in Paris, until their world starts to change. They must wear yellow stars on their clothes and can no longer eat at their favorite boulangerie. Soon, the Nazi soldiers are marching across the city, and the little girl and her family must flee or risk being sent to a concentration camp. They take as much as they can carry and run into the woods, where they meet up with resistance fighters. But they're still not safe, so they travel over mountains to the sea where they can get on a boat to England. The entire time they're gone, the little girl thinks of the stone angel near their apartment in Paris, and imagines it watching over her family. Finally, when the war ends and the family can return, the little girl is able to find her favorite statue and thank the angel for the protection it offered while they were gone.
