Brooklyn Wainwright and her boyfriend, Derek, are staying at her parents' home in Sonoma while their San Franciso loft is being renovated. Brooklyn attends an excavation of a cave and is astonished when it's discovered that the cave contains artwork, rare books, wine, valuable old jewerly--and a body. A closer examination of the dead man reveals a ticket for passage on an ocean liner bound for France--dated more than sixty years ago--and a bullet hole in his chest. Near the body is a first edition copy of A Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne, which Brooklyn takes. In it she discovers an old paper with directions to find something on the winery property. She and Derek follow them and discover a massive treasure trove of jewels, artwork, silver candlesticks, statuary, and more books. They belonged to French winemakers fleeing the Nazis and were hidden there by the grandfather of their local leader Guru Bob. But did he intend to return them--or did he steal them? ...
