Ultrasonography is a quick, widely available, relatively inexpensive, and painless procedure and can be repeated as often as necessary without risk to the patient. This study investigated the efficacy of ultrasonography as a valuable aid in the diagnosis of swelling of orofacial region. The purpose of the present study was to compare the accuracy of clinical examination plus ultrasonography versus histopathological examination in the diagnosis of various swellings of maxillofacial region. The results of this study show that there was statistical difference between clinical examination alone and clinical examination plus ultrasonography in making the correct diagnosis. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive, negative predictive, and accuracy were greater in ultrasound than clinical diagnosis. So, this study supports the ultrasonographic method of imaging of orofacial swellings with high sensitivity and specificity.
