Malnutrition and infection are invariably linked together each aggravating the other. Cell-mediated immunity, a function of the T-cells is markedly depressed by malnutrition. HIV, the virus that causes AIDS acts by destroying the T-cells which are actively involved in the defense of the body against viruses, fungi, parasites, bacteria and destruction of cancer cells.
