A number of genetic alterations shown to be necessary for transformation of normal cell to a cancerous cell. It is found to be inactivated in 60-70% of cancer and in physiological condition the expression of p53 is low (1000-10000) in order to monitor the cellular integrity in mitotically growing cells and has short half life of 30 minutes due to rapid turnover mediated by ubiquitination and proteolysis.
