A carbon nanotube (CNT) can be considered as the ultimate fiber, reflecting highly organized, near ideal sp2 bonded carbon structure. CNTs are flexible but very hard to stretch and have extremely low turn-on fields and high current densities ranking them amongst the best electron field emitters for future field emission displays. These exceptional properties of CNTs have been investigated for devices such as field-emission displays, scanning probe microscopy tips and micro-electronic devices etc. The thesis focuses on synthesis of carbon nanotubes on nanocrystalline films by Low-Pressure CVD and Electron Cyclotron Resonance CVD and their future application as field emitters. Different Ni95Ti5, Fe70Pd30 and Fe70Pt30 nanocrystalline films as catalyst material were prepared by vapour condensation technique.
