Hendrik Hofgen, an unknown actor obsessed with fame, renounces his wife and mistress when the Nazis come to power. The culmination of his ascent into Nazi society comes with his performance as the demonic Mephisto. Hofgen then must face the moral consequnces of his rise to fame.
