Although it has a longer history, the idea that configuration-space coordinates may not commute has arisen recently from string theory. Noncommuting spatial coordinates and fields can be realised in actual physical situations. Noncommutative field theories, which are the field theories in which the coordinates do not commute, have many novel features.
