Jack McClain and Trace Hale met in St Louis Missouri, both running away from things in their past. The fur trade was just getting started and the lure of the wild places brought them together to travel into the unknown, and make a life with no law and no taxes. It was a life of complete freedom, but one of hard work and constant danger as they would wade the frozen streams pulling the beaver from their icy depths. They freed three women of the Crow tribe who had been stolen by the Blackfeet and were being taken to their village as slaves. The women were returned to the Crow village and their lives became entwined with the people of the Crow. When Jack's unborn son was killed in his mother's womb by the kick from a Blackfoot warrior, he and Trace went on a quest of vengeance to kill all they could before they were struck down.
