More than almost any other artist before him, Joseph Beuys has influenced the way we define art and its purpose in society. Expressed in his work is a critical, humanly oriented view that combines rational and emotional elements into a broad conception that he sees permeating and transforming life as a whole. Towards this end Beuys makes use of the most varied media - sculpture, environment, happening, the word both spoken and written, and drawing. This last in particular, allowing as it does the spontaneous expression of an idea or emotion without too much resistance on the part of the material, has developed into one of Beuys's preferred means of expression, and its contribution to his oeuvre is already considerable.
