The Socio-economic life of the tribal people in Mizoram, North East India, has also always been centered on jhum or shifting cultivation. The basic problem is the method of farming the land, that is, the practice of shifting cultivation, which causes depletion of forests and biodiversity, soil erosion as also a complex of environmental damages. Sometimes the production is even marginally negative in agriculture. In order to address the problems of the region Govt of India and many International Agencies have initiated several Watershed development programs to improve people’s livelihoods, socio-economic conditions, environmental problems and abolish the practice of Jhum cultivation.
