War and Peace is set in Russia, at the beginning of the 19th century, during the reign of Tsar Alexander I. His family, the Romanovs, had ruled for almost 200 years and Russia was largely made up of an extremely wealthy, land-owning aristocracy and millions of serfs - slaves who were tied to the land. It was a time of turmoil. Some Russians were starting to question their whole way of life, looking to western Europe for a new approach, though most wanted to continue as they had for centuries. At the same time, the self-styled Emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, was determined to conquer and unite all of Europe. He had already led his "Grande Armee" to victory in most of the west and, in 1812, he invaded Russia. In the terrible war that followed, over 500,000 men died. This is the story of those fateful few years - of war and peace, despair and courage, and, finally, love and wisdom. Adapted by Mary Sebag-Montefiore.
