John Bright, one of the most active, intelligent, and liberal of those in Europe who have become identified with the recent history of events in America, was born on 16th of November, 1811, at Greenbank, Rochdale, England, the residence of his father, Jacob Bright, a cotton spinner and manufacturer. He received an ordinary school education, and at the age of fifteen was placed in the counting-house of his father, to be instructed in the details and management of the business, - destined to become his by inheritance, his elder brother having died at an early age.
