Excerpt from Learning and Living: Academic Essays
To find a suitable title for these essays written at different times and under Each of them was the result of some special impulse pointing to some rather special treatment. They have grown out of a long and varied experience covering important changes in method, an enormous material expansion, a portentous professionalizing of the university career and an almost complete revision of the academic vocabulary.
It is these changes and these expansions that have most sharply caught the attention of the intelligent public. The constant struggle to maintain the higher ideals of education, to separate the permanent from the whimsical and the transient, escapes observation and passes unrewarded. If these scattered academic essays are read together there appears through them all the reflection of this struggle. This does not mean, I trust, that they are the echoes of a forlorn conservatism trying to hold its own against the resistless march of change. On the contrary, they try to point the way to changes still more radical because they go down to the ancient roots of all sound human culture.
