Excerpt from Report on the Establishment of One or More Union Schools in Philadelphia, 1847
At a meeting of the friends and teachers of Sunday-schools, held at the church in Arch street above Tenth, December 14, 1846, some account was given of the "Ragged Schools" of London, and the question was considered, in what form and to what extent schools of the same general design might be successfully maintained in our American cities.
After a free and animated discussion, the whole matter was referred to a committee of seven, (viz. Messrs. Packard, Pechin, Anderson, Alexander, Eldridge, Sulger and Walters,) to prepare a report on the subject, and to suggest such measures as the case might seem to require.
The stated Monthly Prayer-meeting of the teachers and friends of Sunday-schools, was held at the lecture room, corner of Eighth and Cherry street, January 11, 1847. On motion, Rev. M. L. R. Thompson was appointed Chairman, and Mr. J. S. Cummings Secretary.
