Excerpt from What I Remember of the Great Rebellion
In writing this volume it is with mingled feelings of pleasure and pain that I recall the many incidents that naturally occur in such a scene of the Nation"s History as that which I propose to bring to my readers" notice.
I have endeavored to be as plain and- simple as possible, recognizing the fact that "simplicity and truth travel hand in hand."
Truth, or the actual facts, should be the first and main object kept constantly in view in writing history.
It cannot reasonably be expected that I can give a detailed account of engagements, the duties I had to perform being of such a character (Surgeon in Chief of Field Hospital) as to divide my attention.
