The people of Maryland, Kentucky and Missouri who were not disposed to fight as Confederates were numerous enough to prevent their States from being used as supports of the Confederacy. These southern States did not need northern armies to overwhelm such Confederates as were their own citizens. As to them, the event did not assume the shape of an offensive movement of northern armies against the majority in opposition. The Maryland, Kentucky and Missouri antagonists of the Confederates did the great part of the frustrating of their Confederate citizens who struggled within these respective States, and in each helped fight those Confederates who entered the State from other southern States, and, furthermore, participated outside of their State in the contest against the Confederates. To southern men recognition should be given that Maryland, Kentucky and Missouri were kept from the Confederates, and that northern armies were not worn battling to reclaim them.
