Excerpt from Sir William Penn, Knight, Admiral and General at Sea: Great Captain Commander of the Fleet
Presuming that most Pennsylvanians, in common with myself, feel that proper interest in the great founder of our state which makes valuable a knowledge of his father, the valiant admiral, I offer the following slight memoir.
If I may claim the credit of being the first to condense into one volume the substance of what is now ascertainable in regard to Sir William Penn, I would not undervalue the biographical notices in the various cyclopedias; they, however, are brief, and in different degrees imperfect. On the other hand Mr. Granville Penn"s Memorials is a work of such extended and thorough research, that it ranks among standard books of reference, having original authority.
