Excerpt from On the Use of Medicated Inhalations
The subject of direct medication in diseases of the air passages is beginning to attract the attention of physicians, as a field likely to be worked with advantage. It would doubtless have received more attention, but for the fact that it was made a specialty by ignorant persons, and extensively advertised as effecting cures, where the common means were of no avail.
It is evident that much good might result from the judicious use of local applications to diseased surfaces, if these could be used with anything like the degree of definiteness that at-tends their employment elsewhere. And it is the object of this monograph, to show that this can be done with the improved apparatus now employed.
As the study of such a subject necessarily requires yeare, and the united effort of a number of observers, in order to develop it, I need not offer any apology for such imperfections as may be discovered in the present work. It is written to draw more attention to the subject, and to present the practitioner with the results of three years study, as a basis for the commencement of the practice.
