In one of the pleasantest outskirts of London stood, or stands, a pleasant rambling old house, built of red brick, toned by the rains and suns of a hundred and fifty years to a quaint variety of tints. There were bow-windows in it, and balconies, and verandahs, and projections, and recesses, which threw all kinds of irregular shadows, and made you feel attracted at once to the old house which some of its owners had evidently taken such pleasure in: - which, in its small way, had grown up, like an old Gothic church, out of the tastes and needs of people who delighted in it.
