Excerpt from Owned and Disowned: Or, the Chattel Child; A Tale of Southern Life
The Author has endeavored, in the following pages,to weave into the narrative only such truthful and honorable sentiments as shall leave him no opportunity to regret the impressions it shall convey. The offspring of his thought, it has been to him rather a child than a chattel, and he would venture to hope that taking it with the hand of kindness, the reader, after perusal, will receive it as the same by adoption into the literary family which is ranged upon his shelf, to each member of which in turn he has been indebted for a pleasant and profitable hour. Great will he estimate his reward, if in addition, it shall contribute aught to the causes of social and spiritual freedom.
