Excerpt from Two Lectures Upon the Relations of Civil Law to Church Polity, Discipline, and Property

The two following lectures were delivered, by request, before the faculty and students of the Union Theological Seminary in New York, during the winter of 1874 - 5. In preparing them, it was not the purpose of the author to make a full, orderly, and elaborate exposition of the subject intended to be presented. Neither the time nor the space he was at liberty to use, was sufficient for such an exposition.
