Excerpt from Training and Rewards, of the Physician
On a recent transcontinental trip, a Pullman car porter seeking medical aid for one of our fellow passengers, accosted me with the surprising question: "Aren"t you a doctor, sir?" "Yes," I answered, "but how did you guess it?" "Well, I can most always tell "em by the looks," he said, but he could analyse his methods no further. Was it the result of the doctor"s training which the porter supposed he could recognize? I fancy not. A certain type of men, I think, is attracted into the profession of medicine, just as another type of man is attracted into the ministry. Those who answer medicine"s peculiar call have certain traits in common. Thus it is, I believe, the raw material rather than its preparation that determines most of a doctor"s recognizable make-up.
