Excerpt from Conscience and Law: Or a Discussion of Our Comparative, Responsibility to Human and Divine Government

It was the memorable answer of the Savior to the crafty interrogation of those who sought to ensnare him respecting the lawfulness of paying tribute to the Roman government, "Render therefore unto C?sar the things which are C?sar"s, and unto God the things that are Gods." The Pharisees and Herodians had approached him in company as he was engaged in public discourse, and proposed a question which was so framed that whether an affirmative or negative response was given, offence would be taken. There were two parties among the Jews at this time, who held opposite sentiments with reference to the propriety of paying tribute to the Roman government. The Pharisees contended that Herod, who had been set over them as king by the Roman emperor, was not a legitimate sovereign according to the Mosaic law, and that therefore his authority should not be recognized by the payment of the tax levied in the name of the Roman emperor.
