Excerpt from Confederation of the British West Indies Versus Annexation to the United States of America: A Political Discourse on the West Indies
The object of this book is to record in a concrete form the aspirations, as gleaned by the writer, of the people of the British West Indian possessions to liberal political freedom; to discourage by just means the growing tendency towards annexation to the United States or Canada; to preach death to taxation without representation and its allied impositions; to request an end to the present antiquated system of government; to suggest reforms in keeping with our advanced civilization so as to destroy the present means whereby a select body of men are enabled successfully to juggle legislation in order that personal ends may be served at the expense and to the detriment of the man behind the "hoe."
