The following chapters have been written with the needs and problems of the young teacher primarily in view. An effort has been made to present in a concrete way the various steps that may be taken to establish a wholesome school "spirit" that will reduce disciplinary difficulties to a minimum. To this end, most of the chapters deal rather with positive and non-coercive than with restrictive and repressive methods of treatment.
By way of introduction, the essential characteristics of a well-disciplined school are described, and the problem of creating these conditions is stated. The unruly or disorderly school is then assumed; the various causes which lead to disorder are analyzed; and the steps that may be taken to transform the situation are discussed in detail with as many typical concrete illustrations as the limitations of space permit. Coercive measures are treated briefly, following the discussion of the positive measures. An attempt has been made to outline the evolution of the idea of punishment as a coercive agency; and the different types of penalties commonly employed in the school are described and evaluated.
