America today is one of the foremost of industrial nations. Among the other nations of the world few can compete with it in the quantity and quality of industrial products. Even after the domestic wants have been satisfied, America can produce to such an extent that foreign markets can be supplied, if not dominated.
In reaching this pinnacle of industrial supremacy, America has undergone tremendous changes since its discovery. From a vast trackless wilderness in the sixteenth century it has reached a position in the twentieth century comparable, if not superior, to the positions held by the more advanced of the ancient nations of Europe.
The great changes which have occurred have been felt in all spheres of America"s activities. Industry, politics, education, religion, philosophy, and social life have evolved in this short space in an amazing manner. Even today change is ever taking place.
A cross section of the schools of modern America presents a vastly different picture from a similar survey at the close of the seventeenth century. The development of the country"s natural resources, the influences of the Industrial Revolution, the opening of the great west and the evolution of industry have left their mark upon education as well as upon the other departments of social life.
The changes in education have been deeply rooted in the changes in industrial life and scientific thought. The change has been more fundamental than a mere change in pupil enrolment. There has come a realization of a broader and deeper understanding of the purpose and function of education. There has come a change in values.
